Lessons in Self-Acceptance

by Yumi Tomsha | Sep 30, 2014 | coping with fear, face fear, pure obsessional ocd, self-acceptance

My journey with Purely Obsessional OCD has been marked by surprises. When I began my recovery process, I thought I would learn how to erase the intrusive thoughts that filled me with fear and pain. I have gathered valuable tools – and have also healed more than I...

There is something my wife and I are trying that you might be interested in trying yourself with your family and friends. But first know this, what do you think about and what you talk about expands whether you like it or not. You can throw a monkey wrench into that expansion by refocusing, diversion, mindfulness and ERP work, which the majority of us do anyway. But, there’s another way to stop the expansion of OCD negativity. We have decided from time to time to proclaim a “no ocd day“.
Now that doesn’t mean I’m not going to get symptoms and work through those symptoms, but what it does mean is I’m not going to talk about it for the day. I’m going to give my mind a rest and my friends and family a rest from hearing me bitching about how awful it is. If what we think about expands, and it does, not talking about ocd for one day from time to time, is a relief for me and definitely for my wife, family, friends and even people that know me at the grocery store. I’m not kidding. We don’t have to be defined by ocd, we are not ocd. I’m actually going to work at doing this more often. It’s all part of taking my power back. Ya’ know? JC 💙P.S. "No OCD Day(s) might be great for the holidays coming up.

Members, it's hard to believe it's November already. I've created an OCD Recovery Calendar for 2020 that you can purchase at this link. Believe me, I'm not doing this for the money. I get very little per calendar. I am doing it to remind you, every month, that there is hope. The wall calendar includes my photographs and encouraging words that have helped me get better to this day. Click on this link if you are interested. And, never give up hope. JC <3
