It’s OK to just be you.

I taught college for over thirty-six years, but I started to really understand teaching at about year twenty. I think most teachers go through the same thing. They don't teach you how to teach in graduate school. I learned that students wanted inspiration and mentoring over hard core expectations. I taught in the Fine Arts department. I taught Acting for TV and Film, Television, Screenwriting, Filmmaking, all that show biz stuff. So expectations were running high in my young students. They wanted to be fast stars.

I remember one student came into my office after a class in tears. He was in distress because he didn't know what he wanted to be or how to get there. "Jim, what am I going to be!?" I had enough years of OCD recovery and some years of mindfulness training so I offered some advice that I had been working on myself.

Essentially I told him “You don't have to ‘be’ anything. You just have to be.” He looked at me and stopped tearing up. I think he got it. None of us have to be anything other than ourselves at any given moment. The more genuine we are, the more accepting we are, the kinder we are, the more honest we are with ourselves and others, the more trusting we are that we'll be OK, helps to further strengthen our being-ness. Today, despite everything and everyone moving around so quickly, I choose to gracefully be me.
